The House Armed Services Committee has denied the Pentagon’s request to transfer $216.5 million out of RQ-4 Global Hawk accounts to pay for higher-priority military intelligence programs.

Service officials have argued that the modernized U-2s have updated reconnaissance and radar systems with a far greater range than the sensors aboard the Global Hawks. But the plan has been dead on arrival on Capitol Hill, where several key lawmakers have questioned plans to stand down the new drones, which have been tapped for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
